Animal Farm Research
Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, critic, journalist, and essayist born on the 25th June 1903 and passed away on the 21st January 1950. Animal Farm was first published in England on 17 August 1945. According to Orwell, the book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917. The original title was” Animal Farm: A Fairy Story”, Although U.S. publishers dropped the subtitle when it was published in 1946 (Wikipedia, 2017).
Throughout the novel animal farm, the animals are portrayed more like humans than animals, this is called Anthropomorphism. “Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities” (Wikipedia, 2018) Animal farm is also an allegory which according to the Collins English Dictionary means “a story with an underlying meaning as well as the literal one” HarperCollins Publishers (2009). George Orwell also included a lot of satire during the novel. “Satire is a style of writing that intends to ridicule and point out society’s flaws. This ridicule is often masked in humour. When using satire, the writer’s intention is to expose what he thinks is a “problem” in society. This “problem” could be popular or political. The point of satire is not only to expose but also to initiate change. The writer sees a problem and wants it corrected” Writing Explained (2018).

The Writer
Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, critic, journalist, and essayist born on the 25th June 1903 and passed away on the 21st January 1950 (Wikipedia, 2018) He is best known for his fiction novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. His non-fiction works include The Road to Wigan Pier which documents his experience of working-class life in the north of England and Homage to Catalonia an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War.
What the show/story is about
Animal Farm is an novel by George Orwell, first published in England on 17 August 1945. According to Orwell, the book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917. The original title was ”Animal Farm: A Fairy Story”, Although U.S. publishers dropped the subtitle when it was published in 1946 (Wikipedia, 2018).
Animal Farm begins on Manor Farm in England. After Mr Jones, the neglectful owner of the farm, has drunkenly shut the animals away and gone to sleep, the animals all assemble in the barn to hear a respected animal named Old Major speak. In summery Old major explains his dream of a world without man, one ruled by animals. Three days later, Old Major dies and Mr Jones forgets to feed the animals and then attacks them when he sees them helping themselves, at this point, the animals decide to take over. The animals drive Mr Jones and his men off the farm and take over, changing the name to Animal Farm. The animals then paint the seven commandments on the wall, each commandment comes from Old Major’s speech to the animals (Enotes, 2018)
•1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
•2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
•3. No animal shall wear clothes.
•4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
•5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
•6. No animal shall kill any other animal.
•7. All animals are equal.
Many of the different productions differ in style depending on the director, who gets the final decision on how the show will look.
In previous approaches such as “Thomas Rotherham College’s” production of animal farm, they decided to take quite a simple route. They performed the show in a very small performance space and all actors were dressed in black, with chalkboards around their necks with their animals species on. The show also had very simple lighting and sound elements which assisted impacting the audience forcing them to use their own imagination.•2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.

How previous productions differ in style
A theatrical version, with music by Richard Peaslee and lyrics by Adrian Mitchell, was staged at the National Theatre in London on 25 April 1984, directed by Peter Hall. It toured nine cities in 1985. Also, a solo version, adapted and performed by Guy Masterson, premièred at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh in January 1995 and has toured worldwide since. Many of the different productions differ in style depending on the director, who gets the final decision on how the show will look.
What role would you like to undertake?
I would like to undertake the role of DSM in our production of Animal Farm. As I have been the DSM for many of our previous shows, I feel like I have a good knowledge of my roles and responsibilities and what it takes to do a successful job.

In my personal opinion, I think we should stage this show on an angle much like previous college productions such as “Treasure Island” and “A Christmas carol”. Over the past 2 years we have done a lot of shows in the round, so I think it would be very interesting to take a different approach.
I also think that the lighting design should be quite complex, creating an intense atmosphere before and throughout the performance, by using dark and cold colours and using hints of haze every now again.

QLab 4 Features by License TypeQLab 4 is a free program, with additional optional features that can be unlocked by purchasing and installing a license. This chart shows which of the major features are enabled by each type of license.
Most of the advanced features can be used experimentally without a license installed, and will only require the license if you re-open a saved workspace that uses these features.
For those features which cannot be tested in this way, QLab has a demo mode which enables all features for twenty minutes. While demo mode is active, all of QLab's licensed features are available, but saving, copying, and pasting are disabled. All workspaces will automatically close after 20 minutes. Demo mode will exit when you quit QLab.
To activate demo mode, choose Start Demo Mode... from the QLab menu.
